Applying for CHAS and Constructionline
If you looking to apply for both CHAS and Constructionline there is a process to follow to make the application a little less daunting:
CHAS
CHAS is an assessment of your Health & Safety documentation, this is assessed remotely through an online portal. This accreditation is also part of the SSIP umbrella group so you are able to use this if you are asked for any otheraccreditation that falls under the group should you need too.
Constructionline
Constructionline is an online assessment of your Business this includes finance, quality, equal opportunities and Health & Safety. You can use your CHAS certificate to satisfy the documentation needed for the Health & Safety Section of Constructionline.
In order to get both accreditations it is recommended that you get your CHAS first and then Constructionline. Both need to have the assessment fee paid upfront and then you are able to access your application to see the documentation needed to complete. CHAS deem to satisfy process
The CHAS Deem to Satisfy process (DtS) scheme allows contractors to apply for CHAS Standard membership without undergoing another health and safety assessment.
All member schemes listed on the SSIP forum adhere to the SSIP Core Criteria, backed by the Health and Safety Executive.
By mutually recognising each other’s schemes, suppliers benefit from only needing to complete one assessment, while buyers enjoy more efficient procurement processes. This approach reduces costs and has saved over £68 million since 2016.
Eligibility
Contractors must have already met the requirements of an assessment through another SSIP member scheme.
Benefits
Contractors can save time and resources by avoiding a full assessment. They can also avoid paying full price for multiple accreditations.
Process
Contractors can:
Check if they have a qualification that CHAS recognises by contacting CHAS or using the e-form.
Submit their assessment, which will be reviewed within 10 working days.
Respond to any requests for additional information within the 2-week deadline.

Having trouble with your RE-CHAS?
Each application for CHAS is treated as a new application, this is so that your paperwork can be assessed on a yearly basis to ensure that you comply with the latest Health & Safety Legislation. We often get calls from companies saying that the paperwork they have submitted last year has not been accepted this time around.
If you submit documentation that CHAS do not think is up to the standard they need to pass, they will provide you with a list of actions. This will be sent out to you by your appointed CHAS assessor.
The documentation will go into detail to let you know what you need to provide as additional information, there are a number of actions you can then choose:
Compile the documentation yourself
Purchase the documents needed and complete it independently
Contact a Competent Health & Safety Consultant who can provide you with the information needed as well as advice
We can do your CHAS with you starting at £300 + vat for less than 5 employees.

CHAS or Constructionline how do you decide?
We often get asked which one is best CHAS or Constructionline?
Both are part of the SSIP group which means there are a lot more to choose from these just seem to be the two most popular. Recently there has been a new one added called PQS and if price is a factor this one may be work looking at as they offer the cheapest assessment fee on the market.
CHAS is a remote assessment of your Health & Safety Practices within your business, CHAS assess your competence for carrying out the work you detail you perform. CHAS are looking to make sure everything is in place and your company has the correct level of training and competence within your business.
If you have more than 5 employees CHAS will also be looking to make sure you have all your legal responsibilities covered within your Health & Safety policy and you have the correct level of safety advice available to you.
Constructionline is a remote assessment of your company and will be looking for you to provide information about your company, directors, finances and areas of operation. As well as your Health & safety, equal opportunities and environmental management.
Constructionline is an online portal where you are able to update your information and save progress over a period of time to enable to you get the documentation needed together. You can then submit your information and feedback will be provided.
It might be worth looking into the other SSIP accreditations to see if they are the best fit your company, every business is different and if your clients don’t have a preference find the best one for you.

The different between a small and a large CHAS application
Understand the difference between a small and a large CHAS application and the impact of employee numbers on requirements. We often get companies asking us what is the difference between having 4 employees or 5 when applying for CHAS. CHAS define an employee as someone who you pay through your PAYE system, there are different assessment fees due depending on the number of employees you declare.
In particular to CHAS there is an increased number of documents you need to provide as well as evidence of your safety arrangements including Health & Safety policy.
Once you have 5 employees or more you have legal requirements under the Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1974, you need to have formal arrangements in place for competent Safety advice as well as a full Heath & Safety Management system.
