Is CHAS accreditation worth it?

Is CHAS accreditation worth it?

The benefits of CHAS is worth the investment, especially if: You are a small/medium businesses aiming to grow or work with larger clients.

  • You have been told to get CHAS accredited by your client.
  • You want to work for local authorities, large blue- chip companies and principal contractors.
  • You want to save time and reduce admin burden by streamlining pre-qualifications when tendering
  • You don’t already have a strong health & safety compliance system
  • You want to present a professional, safety-first image to clients.

If you are looking for the above, then yes CHAS accreditation is a wise investment.

Here’s a balanced breakdown of the value and considerations

Why CHAS Accreditation Is Valuable

1. It Shows Robust Health & Safety Compliance

CHAS is a recognised third-party assessment that verifies your health & safety management system meets current legislation and SSIP criteria. That gives you credible proof of compliance rather than just internal paperwork.

2. Improved Tendering and Contract Access

Many clients — especially in construction and public sector procurement — require CHAS (or equivalent SSIP) accreditation before inviting bids. Some councils and major contractors automatically reject bids from non-accredited firms.

3. Saves Time on Pre-Qualification

Once you’re CHAS-accredited, your health & safety compliance is pre-qualified — meaning fewer repeated forms and PQQ questions for each tender. This streamlines procurement admin.

4. Reputation & Trust

It’s a widely recognised badge of competence. Clients see it as a signal that you take safety seriously, which helps differentiate you from competitors. Beacon Risk

5. Other Member Benefits

CHAS membership often includes extras like legal helplines, discounts on training and services, and business resources — which can add indirect value.

Considerations & Drawbacks

1. Cost Can Be Significant

Accreditation fees vary by company size and level (Standard/Advanced/Elite), and they’re annual — not one-offs. For smaller businesses, lower-cost SSIP options may be more cost-effective.

2. Time & Documentation Burden

Preparing policies, risk assessments, method statements, insurance docs, training records, etc., takes effort — and many first-time applicants struggle to get it right without support.

3. Other SSIP Members Can Do the Same Job

CHAS is a member of SSIP alongside other schemes. Technically, any SSIP member accreditation should meet the same basic compliance standard, although some clients specifically ask for CHAS.

Practical Tips for Deciding if It’s Worth It

✔️ It’s likely worth it if:

  • Your target clients or frameworks explicitly require or favour CHAS.

  • You’re tendering regularly and want to cut down repeated PQQ work.

  • You want a strong industry-recognised compliance badge.

❓ Think twice if:

  • You rarely tender or clients don’t mandate CHAS.

  • Cost is a tight constraint and you could use a more affordable SSIP route.

  • You already hold a recognised SSIP accreditation that clients accept.

Bottom Line

CHAS accreditation is generally worth it for UK contractors and consultants — especially in construction and procurement-driven sectors — because it can unlock opportunities, save time, and improve credibility. However, it does come with costs and admin effort, and alternative SSIP accreditations may sometimes be a better value depending on your clients and business size.

Why Most CHAS Applications Fail

Before working with us, most clients have already tried to apply on their own.

Here’s what typically goes wrong:

❌ Generic or incomplete Health & Safety policies
❌ RAMS that don’t reflect real work
❌ Missing training and competency evidence
❌ Inconsistent information across documents
❌ Slow or incorrect responses to assessors

The result: Returned applications, delays, and lost work opportunities.

  • Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS)
  • COSHH assessments (if required)
  • Accident reporting procedures
  • Training and competency records

No templates. Everything is built for your actual work.

2. Complete CHAS Application

We:

  • Complete your CHAS submission
  • Upload all documentation
  • Ensure everything aligns with the CHAS assessment criteria

This is where most applications go wrong; we make sure yours doesn’t.

3. Assessor Query Management

Most applications get follow-up questions.

We handle:

  • Additional evidence requests
  • Document updates
  • Assessor communication

Fast responses = faster approval.

4. Compliance Gap Fixing

Before submission, we identify and fix issues such as:

  • Missing training records

You can complete CHAS accreditation yourself, but many contractors choose Seguro support to save time and avoid mistakes. Help is especially useful if you are unfamiliar with health and safety requirements or have limited documentation.

What does CHAS support include?

Our CHAS support includes health and safety policy creation, RAMS preparation, training and insurance checks, completing the CHAS portal, uploading documents and managing assessor queries.

With professional support, most CHAS applications can be prepared and submitted within a few days, with assessment typically taking up to 10 working days, depending on the review process.

Why do CHAS applications fail without support?

Can a consultant complete my CHAS application for me?

Is CHAS support worth it?

CHAS support is often worth it for contractors who want to pass first time, reduce delays and focus on their business rather than managing complex health and safety documentation.

CHAS Training Guidance

You will be required to prove that your personnel have been trained and you have the correct training and procedures to show they are performing their jobs responsibly with Health & Safety.

The training requirements often differ depending on which sector you are in and the business size. CHAS has identified some set minimum criteria, and it is a good place to start for all companies.

To ensure compliance, follow our step-by-step guide to getting CHAS accreditation.

To comply with the standard, you may be required to train your personnel in the following courses if you have not already done so.

CHAS will accept any training qualification provided it meets the content requirements and an organisation of suitable expertise has independently approved it. Training is a key part of the CHAS assessment criteria.

Such organisations include:

  • Relevant Trade Associations, e.g. BESA, ECA
  • Safety organisations, e.g. RoSPA, IOSH, IIRSM

CHAS Renewal: What It Means

CHAS accreditation lasts for 12 months, after which you must renew to remain certified and visible to buyers.

A CHAS renewal involves:

  • Updating your insurance documents

  • Refreshing RAMS, policies, and training records

  • Uploading evidence of compliance

  • Completing the online assessment questionnaire

  • Meeting any new CHAS requirements for that year

When to Start Your CHAS Renewal

CHAS recommends starting 6–8 weeks before your expiry date.

Why early renewal is essential:

  • Insurance documents may need updating

  • Training records may be outdated

  • Missing documentation causes delays

  • You risk losing tenders if your certificate lapses

Documents You Need for CHAS Renewal

Most contractors will need:

Mandatory

  • Employers’ Liability Certificate

  • Public Liability Certificate

  • Health & Safety Policy

  • Risk Assessments & Method Statements (RAMS)

  • Training certificates (CSCS, CITB, Asbestos Awareness, etc.)

Depending on your work

  • PUWER / LOLER evidence

  • COSHH assessments

  • SSOW (Safe Systems of Work)

  • Subcontractor approval process

  • First aid training

If anything expired since your last CHAS assessment, you must replace it before renewal.

Common CHAS Renewal Mistakes

Most renewals fail because of:

❌ Outdated insurance
❌ Missing RAMS
❌ No training evidence
❌ No subcontractor vetting system
❌ Outdated policies
❌ Not addressing changes in legislation

Fix these early, and your renewal will be smooth.

How to Make CHAS Renewal Easy

Many contractors outsource CHAS renewals because the documentation can be time-consuming. A consultant can help with:

  • Completing the online assessment

  • Uploading compliant evidence

  • Creating missing documents

  • Fixing non-conformities

  • Managing the entire renewal on your behalf

If you struggle with CHAS, outsourcing saves time and prevents failed submissions.

Why CHAS Renewal Matters

Renewing CHAS accreditation helps you:

  • Stay compliant with UK health & safety law
  • Win more tenders
  • Stay active on buyer platforms
  • Build trust with clients
  • Demonstrate competence and professionalism

If your CHAS expires, many contractors will no longer be eligible to work on certain sites.

CHAS or NO CHAS?

Are you thinking about getting your CHAS accreditation but not sure if it is the right one for you and your business?

Most of the requests we get to help people with their CHAS applications are from companies who have been asked to have CHAS by a client that they are working with for the first time or for a tender they are applying for.

CHAS is part of the SSIP umbrella group, so it is seen in the industry as a measure of a company’s ability to deliver its services while complying with Health & Safety. As CHAS measures the Health & Safety process within your company, looking at your risk assessments and method statements that you use on current projects to achieve the accreditation shows you meet the required standard.

The accreditation can help you gain more work and open doors for you to work with larger clients and public bodies. A membership fee is applicable, and if you choose to get help with completing the paperwork, there will also be a fee payable for that process. So, you need to make a business decision.

Is the initial cost worth it for the potential gain?

CHAS deem to satisfy process

The CHAS Deem to Satisfy process (DtS) scheme allows contractors to apply for CHAS Standard membership without undergoing another health and safety assessment.

All member schemes listed on the SSIP forum adhere to the SSIP Core Criteria, backed by the Health and Safety Executive.

By mutually recognising each other’s schemes, suppliers benefit from only needing to complete one assessment, while buyers enjoy more efficient procurement processes. This approach reduces costs and has saved over £68 million since 2016.

Eligibility

Contractors must have already met the requirements of an assessment through another SSIP member scheme.

Benefits

Contractors can save time and resources by avoiding a full assessment. They can also avoid paying full price for multiple accreditations.

Process

Contractors can:

  1. Check if they have a qualification that CHAS recognises by contacting CHAS or using the e-form.
  2. Submit their assessment, which will be reviewed within 10 working days.
  3. Respond to any requests for additional information within the 2-week deadline.
