CHAS Training Guidance
You will be required to prove that your personnel have been trained and you have the correct training and procedures to show they are performing their jobs responsibly with Health & Safety.
The training requirements often differ depending on which sector you are in and the business size. CHAS has identified some set minimum criteria, and it is a good place to start for all companies.
To comply with the standard, you may be required to train your personnel in the following courses if you have not already done so.
CHAS will accept any training qualification provided it meets the content requirements and an organisation of suitable expertise has independently approved it.
Such organisations include:
Relevant Trade Associations, e.g. BESA, ECA
Safety organisations, e.g. RoSPA, IOSH, IIRSM
Government agencies, e.g. CITB
Regulated training authorities, e.g. City & Guilds
Seguro health and safety training
We offer a vast amount of health and safety elearning courses at a fraction of the cost you’d expect; this health and safety e-learning has the bonus of a minimal loss of productivity because it’s efficient and flexible.

The CHAS accreditation process reviews your company’s ability to perform your activities complying with Health & Safety every year.
Documentation is provided on recent jobs and processes you are working on at the time of application. As these could change within 12 months, CHAS has a process where each application is seen as new and lasts for 12 months.
CHAS assesses your Health & Safety, which is done remotely; you get access to an online portal once you have paid. Once everything is uploaded to the portal, you can submit it for approval.
The CHAS assessor will take up to 10 working days to reply to your submitted documentation with their findings.

CHAS Renewal: What It Means
CHAS accreditation lasts for 12 months, after which you must renew to remain certified and visible to buyers.
A CHAS renewal involves:
Updating your insurance documents
Refreshing RAMS, policies, and training records
Uploading evidence of compliance
Completing the online assessment questionnaire
Meeting any new CHAS requirements for that year
When to Start Your CHAS Renewal
CHAS recommends starting 6–8 weeks before your expiry date.
Why early renewal is essential:
Insurance documents may need updating
Training records may be outdated
Missing documentation causes delays
You risk losing tenders if your certificate lapses
Documents You Need for CHAS Renewal
Most contractors will need:
Mandatory
Employers’ Liability Certificate
Public Liability Certificate
Health & Safety Policy
Risk Assessments & Method Statements (RAMS)
Training certificates (CSCS, CITB, Asbestos Awareness, etc.)
Depending on your work
PUWER / LOLER evidence
COSHH assessments
SSOW (Safe Systems of Work)
Subcontractor approval process
First aid training
If anything expired since your last CHAS assessment, you must replace it before renewal.
Common CHAS Renewal Mistakes
Most renewals fail because of:
❌ Outdated insurance ❌ Missing RAMS ❌ No training evidence ❌ No subcontractor vetting system ❌ Outdated policies ❌ Not addressing changes in legislation
Fix these early, and your renewal will be smooth.
How to Make CHAS Renewal Easy
Many contractors outsource CHAS renewals because the documentation can be time-consuming. A consultant can help with:
Completing the online assessment
Uploading compliant evidence
Creating missing documents
Fixing non-conformities
Managing the entire renewal on your behalf
If you struggle with CHAS, outsourcing saves time and prevents failed submissions.
Why CHAS Renewal Matters
Renewing CHAS accreditation helps you:
Stay compliant with UK health & safety law
Win more tenders
Stay active on buyer platforms
Build trust with clients
Demonstrate competence and professionalism
If your CHAS expires, many contractors will no longer be eligible to work on certain sites.

CHAS or NO CHAS?
Are you thinking about getting your CHAS accreditation but not sure if it is the right one for you and your business?
Most of the requests we get to help people with their CHAS applications are from companies who have been asked to have CHAS by a client that they are working with for the first time or for a tender they are applying for.
CHAS is part of the SSIP umbrella group, so it is seen in the industry as a measure of a company’s ability to deliver its services while complying with Health & Safety. As CHAS measures the Health & Safety process within your company, looking at your risk assessments and method statements that you use on current projects to achieve the accreditation shows you meet the required standard.
The accreditation can help you gain more work and open doors for you to work with larger clients and public bodies. A membership fee is applicable, and if you choose to get help with completing the paperwork, there will also be a fee payable for that process. So, you need to make a business decision.
Is the initial cost worth it for the potential gain?

The CHAS Deem to Satisfy process (DtS) scheme allows contractors to apply for CHAS Standard membership without undergoing another health and safety assessment.
All member schemes listed on the SSIP forum adhere to the SSIP Core Criteria, backed by the Health and Safety Executive.
By mutually recognising each other’s schemes, suppliers benefit from only needing to complete one assessment, while buyers enjoy more efficient procurement processes. This approach reduces costs and has saved over £68 million since 2016.

Contractors must have already met the requirements of an assessment through another SSIP member scheme.
Benefits
Contractors can save time and resources by avoiding a full assessment. They can also avoid paying full price for multiple accreditations.

CHAS or Constructionline how do you decide?
We often get asked which one is best CHAS or Constructionline?
Both are part of the SSIP group which means there are a lot more to choose from these just seem to be the two most popular. Recently there has been a new one added called PQS and if price is a factor this one may be work looking at as they offer the cheapest assessment fee on the market.
CHAS is a remote assessment of your Health & Safety Practices within your business, CHAS assess your competence for carrying out the work you detail you perform. CHAS are looking to make sure everything is in place and your company has the correct level of training and competence within your business.
If you have more than 5 employees CHAS will also be looking to make sure you have all your legal responsibilities covered within your Health & Safety policy and you have the correct level of safety advice available to you.
Constructionline is a remote assessment of your company and will be looking for you to provide information about your company, directors, finances and areas of operation. As well as your Health & safety, equal opportunities and environmental management.

The different between a small and a large CHAS application
Understand the difference between a small and a large CHAS application and the impact of employee numbers on requirements. We often get companies asking us what is the difference between having 4 employees or 5 when applying for CHAS. CHAS define an employee as someone who you pay through your PAYE system, there are different assessment fees due depending on the number of employees you declare.
In particular to CHAS there is an increased number of documents you need to provide as well as evidence of your safety arrangements including Health & Safety policy.
Once you have 5 employees or more you have legal requirements under the Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1974, you need to have formal arrangements in place for competent Safety advice as well as a full Heath & Safety Management system.
