Frequently asked questions

Helping people get their CHAS accreditation for over 25 years.

What is CHAS accreditation?
CHAS accreditation is a recognised health and safety assessment for contractors. It helps prove that your business has suitable health and safety policies, procedures and evidence in place to meet client and tender requirements.
Do I need CHAS accreditation?
You may need CHAS accreditation if you want to work for main contractors, local authorities, housing providers, commercial clients or organisations that require SSIP health and safety certification before allowing contractors onto site.
How do I get CHAS accredited?
To get CHAS accredited, you need to register with CHAS, choose the correct assessment level, prepare your health and safety documents, upload evidence to the CHAS portal and respond to any assessor questions.
What documents are needed for CHAS accreditation?
Typical CHAS documents include a health and safety policy, risk assessments, method statements, training records, insurance certificates, accident reporting procedures, competent advice details and evidence of monitoring and workforce communication.
How long does CHAS accreditation take?
The timescale depends on how complete your documents are and how quickly the assessment is reviewed. With professional support, the required documents can often be prepared within a few working days before submission.
Can Seguro complete my CHAS application for me?
Yes. Seguro Health and Safety can prepare the required documents, complete the CHAS application, upload evidence and deal with assessor queries on your behalf to make the process easier.
Why do CHAS applications fail?
CHAS applications often fail because of missing documents, outdated policies, poor RAMS, expired insurance, lack of competent advice, missing training records or generic paperwork that does not reflect the contractorโ€™s actual work.
Is CHAS the same as SSIP?
CHAS is not the same as SSIP. SSIP is the umbrella organisation that sets common assessment standards, while CHAS is one of the accreditation schemes that assesses contractors against those SSIP core criteria.
How long does CHAS accreditation last?
CHAS accreditation normally lasts for 12 months. Contractors need to renew it each year to remain accredited and continue meeting client or tender requirements.
